Understanding Your Bill

full width paragraph

Many factors determine how much your electric bill is every month.  With so much information available on this monthly communication, it is helpful to review the key areas.

Electric Bill Example

1) Message: Look for upcoming events, office closings, and promotions throughout the year in this box. If your account is set up to be paid automatically, you will also notice in red letters “Auto-Pay – Do Not Pay.”

2) This section provides details about your account and how you are billed for the current period.

  • Bill Date: The date your bill was mailed.

  • Member Number: This is your Farmers’ Electric Member number. Please refer to this number when contacting the office or accessing your online account. Every Member has a Member number. If you have several accounts with Farmers’ Electric, you will have an invoice bill that breaks down each of your Member Separators (or accounts) on one billing statement.

  • Service Address: Indicates the physical address that is served with electricity.

  • Due Date: The day of the month on which your bill is due to avoid a late fee. Depending on which billing cycle you choose, your due date will either be the 1st or the 15th of each month.

  • Description: This best describes what structure the electricity powers.

  • Meter Number: All meters on our system are categorized by a number.

  • Service From: Depending on which billing cycle you choose, your meter is read on the 10th or the 24th of each month. The Service From date represents the first date your meter was read for the current period.

  • Service To: This date represents the last date your meter was read for the current period.

  • Present Meter Reading: This reading was collected from your meter on the Service To date.

  • Previous Meter Reading: This was the reading collected from your meter on the Service From date.

  • Total Kilowatt Usage: Subtract the Previous from the Present Meter Reading, and you come up with the total amount of kilowatt-hours you used and are billed for in the current service period.

3) Information in this section is transferred over from your previous month’s bill.

  • Previous Balance: This indicates last month’s total bill amount.

  • Payment Received: This includes the date your last payment was received as well as the amount of the payment.

  • Past Due Balance: If your full payment amount was not collected last month, you will have a past due balance to be paid with your current bill.

4) Current Charges: Here, you can find a breakdown of what charges make up your current bill. If you have a Yard Light on your pole, the charge will display here as well as if you receive bill credits. Budget Billing Members can keep track of their “true balance” by this information.

5) Return Stub: The bottom third of your statement is perforated and is the portion we ask that you mail back if you choose to mail your payment. By including the return stub with your payment, you are assuring accurate credit to the proper account. This portion of your bill has your Member Number, Due Date, Total Amount Due, and space on the back to update your account information.
